Golf Picture - paintings of the Killeen Course by Pat Collins, Michael McCarthy, Roger McCarthy, Olivia O Carra, Bob Ó Cathail
Imagination. That is the key to getting the most out of the 3 Irish Open Golf tournament that runs in Killarney over the August Bank Holiday week-end and of this exhibition that has five artists celebrating the Killeen Golf Course on which the championship will be held. In Michael McCarthy's 'Putting on the 1st Killeen' (no. 10) and 'Sunlight on the 2nd Killeen' (no. 9) it is easy to imagine the Fianna, the Irish warriors of legend, hunting along the shores of Lough Leane under the shadow of the Killarney mountains. In the past 14,000 years - since the end of the last ice age - woodlands that are unique in Europe have developed here. Olivia O'Carra's 'Woodland, Lake & Mountain' (18th O'Mahony's Point - no. 18) and her 'Land of Lakes' (18th Killeen - no. 19) show waters that have ice age fish and skies now witnessing the return of the Sea Eagle for the first time in over 100 years. Think deeply on Pat Collin's 'Peninsular Challenge' (4th Killeen - no. 1). Nearby are the 4,500 year old oldest copper mines in north western Europe. Throughout Co Kerry there are 10,000 archaeological sites dating back some 10,000 years, including an ancient cooking site here on Killeen. On the lake south of the golf course an island where the oldest history of Munster was written down over 1,300 years ago. As well castles and great houses are memorials to successive invasions. Roger McCarthy paints a place of history 'View of Clubhouse, Killarney Golf & Fishing Course' (no. 11). Legend, nature, and human heritage are brought to life in story, music, song and dance. The 19th at Killeen, Killarney pubs and streets are host to Bob O'Cathail's 'Triangulist' (no. 23) and 'Trumpeter' (no. 25). What Irish gathering would be complete without them? A country with a heritage of story, that goes back to before time as we know it, ... spectacular landscape ... rich and varied flora and fauna ... an unparalleled archaeology ... a history that has great highs and terrible lows ... and a capacity to encapsulate all of that in story, music and song. That is the Ireland represented by the Killeen course in the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club - where the 3 Irish Open will be played - and that is featured in this exhibition.
