Place & People - now & forever - paintings by Tom Greaney, Roger McCarthy & Denise Ryan
'Windswept' might be Tom Greaney's description of the state of the country at the moment. While being out in a storm can be very distressing it can also be exhilarating and challenging. Maybe that is some consolation? The triptych 'Ascent, Gleninagh Mountain' is Denise Ryan's impression of place, weather and seasonal colour at a particular moment. Is the painting also infused with something of the effort and pain in getting to the top? Imagine the stories a young Roger McCarthy might have brought away from 'Ned the Blacksmith's'. The comings and goings of the day. Snatches from the broader world. Heroics of the playing field. Tales of giants that date from an ageless time. 'Rustic Autumn' accurately portrays the amazing colours to be seen over these past weeks. Tom Greaney's painting shows why this is the favourite time of the year for many artists. But unless the scene is captured it is lost for another year – or maybe several years. Denise Ryan's triptych 'Owl's Flight' is from a nightly world that most of us know so little about. The limited penetration of the dark by the light from a crescent moon. The silent flight and searing cry of the night predator. While there is an old and contemporary mythology about 'Wet Day, Killarney' Roger McCarthy shows that it also has unique beauty. The reflections in the wet streets. The deeper colours. People clustering and heading to the pub. In 'Blasket Sound' Tom Greaney shows a great panorama and yet without compromising gives a feeling for the elements that come together to make the scene. Denise Ryan's 'Shore Field' gives a very effective feeling of a wet, rugged, slippery green and brown place. In ‘Milk Market, Limerick’ McCarthy shows a scene that was familiar in every town and village in Ireland up to 50 years ago and is coming back to offer fresh food from producer directly to consumer. Mikey O'Donnell and Frank Hennessy tell stories like you never heard before.
