Memories of Ireland & Heat of Australia, paintings by Jim Kinch
The feel of being stretched, an emotion, a place, an intimacy, a period, of things, of a person … these are the essence of Jim Kinch's impressionist paintings.
The exhilaration, the feeling of being stretched, of being completely alert and in touch with ones surroundings is uniquely achieved on a yacht cutting through a great rolling sea. 'Summer Sail' emphasises this constantly changing world between sky and sea .. a place of some danger.
Receiving last minute instructions. Animal ready to gallop. Rider tense, fully alert, anxious to be off. Other riders already on their way to the starting line. 'Jockey Pre-race' captures the emotions
Cattle grazing contentedly. Hay in cocks. A calm, peaceful sea. Cottages that fit with the landscape. A memory of growing up or of a memorable holiday. It is the perfect 'Idyll'.
"Did you hear the one about ….?" Three men talking animatedly. Oblivious of anybody else. Though the crowded pub and enjoying a pint is all part of the occasion. This is 'Bar Craic'.
Adrenalin is running high for horse and rider in 'Beach Canter' … spray rising from racing hooves … horse's mane and tail and riders hair all blowing in the wind … the backdrop of sea rolling ashore .. a touch of menace in the sky.
'Red turf cart in the rain'. The life of the farmer in days gone-bye is so often romanticised. A life without care. None of the hurry and bustle of to-day. Living close to nature out in the healthy fresh air. But you can't eat scenery. So often there was the numbing pressure of trying to make ends meet. And then the weather … the cold, sodden rain that so often broke the farmer''s health.
Things that suggest events - remembered, anticipated or current. A celebration? Grand living? Elegance? Good taste? Even a little sustenance. What does 'Champagne & Coffee Pot' suggest to you?
The tension and colour that appeals to the child in all of us is the entire focus in 'Circus Horse' . Young eyes - and those not so young - can see only the horse and its exotic passenger.
So often a scene in nature conveys a human emotion. 'Harbour Morning' exudes tranquility / peace / contentment. And yet this is not a scene to put you to sleep. It has a vitality and freshness that stimulates, demands attention.
