Landscape & Man, paintings by Marijke Van Wijk, sculpture by Hans Blank
Marijke van Wijk's pictures celebrate the landscape and man's interaction with his physical surroundings. Hans Blank's bronze sculptures are informed by mythology - particularly of the after-life - the sea and survival. Together they have had a life-long fascination with the sea. Living on a boat for over 20 years. Since the end of the 1980s spending part of every year living near the Kerry coast with their two sons. 'Dingle Harbour: Disintegration of the Roseland I' (pencil; No. 50) is the first of four drawings in which Marijke records the disintegration of an abandoned fishing trawler. In this first picture the boat is still intact. By picture four only the ribs remain. In 'Old Shed, Rusty Roof II' (pastel; No. 18) Marijke highlights colour where another might see only decay. 'Men Against the Wind' (No. 9) visualises the strength of wind and man’s battle with the elements. Blank has shaped the three figures fighting their way against the wind to look like a sail or a kite. In 'House Ballydavid I' (linocut: 1/10; No. 12) Marijke suggests the clustering of humans - perhaps to survive the challenges from nature and other humans! The settlement is tightly interwoven to most effectively protect against whatever might come. The 'Violin Player' (No. 1) might represent the traditional and the classical. Proud. Mysterious. How can he make the violin sing so beautifully? Where did his journey begin? Where will it end? 'Mount Brandon in the Spring' (oil; No. 8) highlights the strength and vitality of colour in nature's most colourful season. The transition from the deep brown winter landscape to the rich greens of Spring. Morning clouds with slashes of orange warning 'A red sky in the morning ....' Richness and danger emphasised by the early sun. In 'Lifeboat Crew' (No. 5) Hans shows backbreaking work being undertaken with absolute commitment. The coxswain confident, in charge. Unquestioning dedication to saving the lives of fellow seamen. In 'Fuschia & Blackberry Bushes' (pastel; No. 36) Marijke captures the lush richness of this year's growth at its pinnacle. Hans's 'Orpheus & Euridice' ( No. 11) shows two figures fused into one in exuberant dance, recording their boundless love for one another - in a story of great heroism that ends in tragedy. This Irish debut solo exhibition of Marijke van Wijk's pictures is a mini retrospective of her oils, pastels, pencil drawings and linocuts. Marijke has worked as an art teacher for 30 years. She has been a co-ordinator in a museum for modern art and serves on the culture committee for her municipality in the Netherlands. Hans Blank has worked full-time as a sculptor for over 30 years showing his work in Holland, America, France and Ireland.
